This is largely due to the need &#8211; real or perceived &#8211; to exploit a small technological lead over competitors or to address a narrow market window. But many such organizations are disproportionately staffed with technology personnel, skilled in the company&#8217;s particular technical domain, but often lacking the sufficient balance of marketing, sales and other skills.<br /><br /> As a result, many of these organisations experience significant growing pains and fail to convert greater organizational size to step-change increases in revenue. In particular, the reasons why you can&#8217;t afford to leave service management involvement until just before things are about to go live, as so often happens.&#8221;</em> </div> <div>&#160;</div> <div>The service management team really needs to be involved from very early on in any project, when the service is being designed.&#160; If you leave the involvement until final testing, then it will be too late to change anything that needs changing for a quality live service.</div> <div> <br /> </div> <div> </div> <div> <em>&#8220;You need to think about how you&#8217;ll run and manage it right from the start. CIOs tend to think service management just runs the helpdesk. And to be honest, that&#8217;s because that&#8217;s all a lot of service management teams do.&#160; But there is so much more to IT service management. The other issue here is that service management don&#8217;t sell themselves well and don&#8217;t insist on getting involved early,&#8221;</em> Holland says.</div> <div> <br /> </div> <div> </div> <div>Without good management, a <em>&#8220;technological marvel can turn into a service disaster &#8211; just look at the Hadron Collider! Recently they had a major cooling plant outage, and it turned out to have been caused by a bit of crusty bread supposedly dropped by a passing bird. Now, the technology designers designed a nice technical design, but it turned out not to be fit for live service.&#160; If you&#8217;d asked service management, by their very nature they would consider risks to service, and think, &#8216;hmm, what could go wrong here? Let&#8217;s cover the open power rail, just in case.&#8217; It&#8217;s really about common sense, and focusing on maintaining service, rather than just focusing on the technology itself,&#8221;</em> he says.</div> <div> <br /> </div> <div> </div> <div>One challenge that cloud computing highlights is how to achieve homogenous service management for the end-to-end service, recognising that the service management teams of suppliers and customers have different roles.</div> <div> <br /> </div> <div> </div> <div>Each supplier&#8217;s service management team needs to know about every single piece of hardware and software that makes up their service,&#160; with tools to track what&#8217;s being used, where is it, what versions of software are on which machines. They also need tools to perform housekeeping and manage upgrades consistently across their distributed environment whilst maintaining service.</div> <div>&#160;</div> <div> <em>&#160;&#8220;Also, what levels of service can you really, actually achieve with your cloud? What are you selling to customers? Do you offer any guarantees &#8211; and if so, can you actually meet them?"</em> </div> <div> <br /> </div> <div> </div> <div> <em>&#8220;In this distributed environment, how will you find faults, how will you manage your capacity - you will need to invest in diagnostic tools. You also have to design resilience in and test that it works&#160; &#8211; don&#8217;t assume it&#8217;s there just because the technicians say so.&#8221;</em> </div> <div>&#160;</div> <div>From the customer&#8217;s perspective, service management needs to think in terms of buying and managing services rather than technology: that&#8217;s a huge shift, Holland says.</div> <div> <br /> </div> <div> </div> <div> <em>&#8220;They shouldn&#8217;t have to know about the technology at all. That&#8217;s a huge cultural change and it needs to be addressed if cloud&#8217;s going to take off. You don&#8217;t quiz the power company about the spec of the capacitors in their power plants, you just want to know about the service they&#8217;ll provide.&#160; Service management&#8217;s job is to manage the supplier to provide the services that have been bought."</em> </div> <div> <br /> </div> <div> </div> <div>Service management teams will need to work with the business to develop strategies for buying services. Which services are suitable for the cloud, and which aren&#8217;t?&#160; Email?&#160; Storage? What level of risk is your organisation prepared to take?&#160; And do you really know what you&#8217;re buying and who you&#8217;re buying it from?</div> <div>&#160;</div> <div> <em>&#8220;This is where service management can play very strongly,&#8221; Holland says. &#8220;Matching service level requirements to service capabilities, being very specific about what&#8217;s wanted and all the important details:&#160; for example, who does a user call when it breaks &#8211; Google?! That&#8217;s not going to work for either the customer of the supplier.&#8221;</em> </div> <div>&#160;</div> <div> <em>&#8220;Cloud is also the biggest threat to the future of service management &#8211; if your business users can buy services straight out of the cloud from their desktop,&#160; then why do they need to engage&#160; IT, or service management, at all?&#160; They DO need to, but unless service management make the required change in mindset and culture, they will get bypassed and die.&#8221;</em> </div> <div>&#160;</div> <div>&#160;<em>&#8220;For all this to work&#8221;</em>, Holland says, <em>&#8220;we need a &#8216;toolset integration standard&#8217; for service management &#8211; a standard way of specifying and reporting incidents and making routine requests between organisations.&#160; There isn&#8217;t such a standard at the moment, but complex clouds will not be able to operate effectively without one.&#8221;</em></div> <div> <br /> </div> <div> </div> <div> <em>&#8220;I&#8217;d also like to see a comparison engine for accredited services, to allow companies to choose wisely. It should offer capabilities, ratings, and prices. And to do that, you need to describe services in a standard way. Cloud brings this more to the fore because all the services are being offered &#8216;as is&#8217;, rather than specified by each customer."</em> </div> <div>&#160;</div> <div> <em>&#8220;If service management teams step up to the mark on this, they&#8217;ll prove their worth. Otherwise, they&#8217;ll be seen as no use to &#8216;man nor beast&#8217;. And I can predict now that there&#8217;ll be some spectacular failures, where customers buy something that doesn&#8217;t work as expected.&#160; The supplier will go bust, they won&#8217;t be able to get their data... it&#8217;s bound to happen,&#8221;</em> he says.&#160; <em>&#8220;I also predict we will see some sharp selling practices for cloud services;&#160; &#8216;65% off all storage, offer ends Thursday&#8230;."</em></div> <div> <br /> </div> <div> </div> <em>&#8220;Hence you need to go into the cloud marketplace with eyes open, and brain engaged!&#8221;<br /></em> <br /> <div> <span style="font-style: italic">This article is produced by </span> <a style="font-weight: bold" href="http://lat.globalwatchonline.com/epicentric_portal/site/lat/">Digital Systems</a> <span style="font-style: italic">. "There's still a fairly small pool of talent in Scotland, so the search often extends to London, or attempting to lure Scots back north of the border." <br /><br /> Sadly, this has yet to transfer to salaries. Most firms are sticking with rates at around &#163;30-40k at the lower level and &#163;80-100k for head of functions, says Leeman. <br /><br /> Richard Fletcher, director of headhunters Fletcher Jones, says it's also buoyant at the senior end. <br /><br /> "Clearly, more importance has been placed on this recently within both fund management firms and banks," he says. "We're seeing a combination of external recruitment and internal re-shuffling, and it remains a relatively scarce skill-set in Scotland."<br /></div> </div> Fri, 05 Feb 2010 16:22:10Andrew SteelFri, 05 Feb 2010 16:12:38Thu, 05 Feb 2015 16:12:38http://brightpurple.webwisebusiness.co.uk/News/BusinessComment/tabid/127/default.aspx?article=Risk+and+Compliance++Stricter+FSA+Regulation+Creating+New+Opportunities 27http://brightpurple.webwisebusiness.co.uk//Portals/0/Members/Steel_Andrew/BrightPurple thumb.jpgOut Of Recession, Into Employment - REC Predicts Job Market Boosthttp://brightpurple.webwisebusiness.co.uk/News/FinanceComment/tabid/120/default.aspx?article=Out+Of+Recession+Into+Employment++REC+Predicts+Job+Market+Boost 26As the UK moves out of the recession, many are predicting a rise in employment opportunities, including those in Scotland's financial sector...Thu, 28 Jan 2010 15:55:24 GMTOut Of Recession, Into Employment - REC Predicts Job Market BoostAs the UK moves out of the recession, many are predicting a rise in employment opportunities, including those in Scotland's financial sector... <div>&#160;</div> <p> </p> <div align="center"> <img alt="Rise in Job Vacancies in Scottish Financial Sector as UK Emerges From Recession" src="/Portals/0/Members/Steel_Andrew/Out of Recession banner.jpg" width="405" height="146" /> </div> <div>&#160; <br /></div> <div>With the country now officially out of recession according to figures published this week, the <a target="_blank" href="http://www.rec.uk.com/press/news/926">Recruitment and Employment Confederation</a> (REC) are predicting that the beginning of recovery could further boost employer confidence and accelerate the already increasing demand for both temporary and permanent staff.</div> <div>&#160;</div> <div>The latest REC JobsOutlook survey showed clear signs that employer confidence is already of the rise as one in five businesses surveyed plan to increase the size of their permanent workforce over the coming year, while 90% confirmed that they plan now further job cuts in 2010.<br /></div> <div>&#160;</div> <div>The figures come on the back of a recent report which suggests that permanent staff placements are growing at their fastest rate in the past 18 months, while temporary placements are rising at the sharpest rate in over 30 months.</div> &#160;<br /><div>The figures support predictions for employment in Scotland's financial sector in 2010, which is expecting redundancy rates to drop dramatically and many firms to add staff.</div><div>&#160;</div><div>This time last year, job vacancies in Scotland's financial sector were down by more than 90% on the previous year. Your role in driving those standards, and finding the right person for the right job, has never been more in demand.&#8221;<br /><br /><br /><strong><em>From </em></strong><a href="http://www.recruiter.co.uk/tougher-regulations-mean-more-demand-for-quality-recruiters/1003654.article"><strong><em>Recruiter</em></strong></a><br /></div> Tue, 08 Dec 2009 16:53:25Andrew SteelTue, 08 Dec 2009 16:37:33Mon, 08 Dec 2014 16:37:33http://brightpurple.webwisebusiness.co.uk/News/FinanceComment/tabid/120/default.aspx?article=Tighter+Financial+Regulation+Creates+Opportunity+For+Quality+Recruiters 22IT Skill Shortage May Hurt Financial Sector's Recoveryhttp://brightpurple.webwisebusiness.co.uk/News/ITComment/tabid/121/default.aspx?article=IT+Skill+Shortage+May+Hurt+Financial+Sectors+Recovery 21Financial organisations forced to cut costs on key skills and personel to cope with the recession must now act quickly to replace the short-fall in skilled IT professionals.Tue, 17 Nov 2009 10:16:05 GMTIT Skill Shortage May Hurt Financial Sector's RecoveryFinancial organisations forced to cut costs on key skills and personel to cope with the recession must now act quickly to replace the short-fall in skilled IT professionals. <div> <div align="center">&#160;</div> <div align="center"> <img border="0" alt="Bright Purple - IT Recruitment" src="/Portals/0/Members/Steel_Andrew/IT Recruitment banner.jpg" width="405" height="146" /> </div> </div> <div>&#160;</div> <div>A serious lack in skilled and available IT professionals, coupled with a reluctance to invest in adequately training workers for recovery could hurt financial firms emerging from the damage wrought by the recession.</div> <div>&#160;</div> <div>Recent research conducted by Parity shows that 49% of financial organisations claim they aren't worried about how they will re-skill and resource their IT team, and a further 34% have not begun planning yet. Anyone who thinks that people living on the street might be "<em>at it</em>" in certain cases (I was one who might of pre-judged from time to time), should try a Byte Night out!<br /> &#160;<br /> Total respect from my team to anyone forced to live on the streets of the UK, young or old, because this one night turned into one of the hardest experiences of my life to date - in fact harder than the 4 days I spent at altitude walking 4 Alpine glaciers - hand on heart!<br /><br /><strong>And So It Begins!<br /></strong><br /> After a bowl of warm chilli, we&#160;ventured out of the <strong>Scottish Parliament</strong> around 10pm to take up our places in <strong>Holyrood Park in Edinburgh</strong>, only to be met by rain and wind as soon as we stepped out of the door - great start. After some banter and an auction inside a small marquee, during which&#160;we met the <strong>beautiful STV weather girl Jean Johansson</strong>, it was out in to the field of battle. Off we trudged miserably with our ground sheets and sleeping bags in hand and of course the most essential item, our orange survival bags. Over 100 hardy souls decided to take up the challenge in Edinburgh, how many in the South I wonder, hundreds?<br /><br /></div> <div align="center"> <img border="0" alt="Bright Purple Byte Night - Nick Price and STV Weathergirl Jean Johansson" src="/Portals/0/Members/Steel_Andrew/Nick and STV weather girl Jean Johansson.jpg" width="405" height="246" /> <div>Nick with STV weathergirl Jean Johansson</div> </div> <div> <br /> Spirits were high amongst the&#160;<strong style="color: #800080"><a href="http://www.brightpurple.co.uk"><strong style="color: #800080">Bright Purple</strong></a> Noses</strong> (our team name!), but maybe that was because the spirits that were drunk to battle the cold were taking affect? Everyone was suitably relaxed and&#160;the patter was good&#160;and then the wind started to drive in and it was only midnight. Dee decided to sing, it started with<strong> 'Stary Stary Night'</strong> and actually it was the same song for an hour -&#160; she can be really annoying (but a real star at the same time)! The rain started to fall even heavier and we tried to jockey for positions on the groundsheet - old boy Nick, wisest of the crew, found his strategy had worked and found the middle of the sheet, flanked by Ryan and Claire - natural wind and rain breakers! Mike was snuggled up, cozy in his bag and with his Rick Astley haircut still intact! Dee, well she was still wandering around in her own little world, still singing and annoying everyone who was trying to get what little sleep they could.<br /><br /><strong>3am</strong><br /><br /> We were hit by absolutely driving, torrential rain and the wind was whistling through our flimsy survival bags. Dee told us she needed the bathroom 'again' and Ryan still suffering from jet lag, having just returned from a wedding in Chicago, was trying to keep his eyes shut. However Dee, who decided against sleeping in her sleeping bag, wanted to cuddle in with him - Dee I don't think you realised Ryan's bag was made for just one?<br /><br /> Puddles were now forming fast all around us as the rain continued to fall and one thing you notice when&#160;sleeping rough is how noisy it is! Bags rustling, people talking, singing and laughing, snoring, cars passing at a distance, everything just seemed even more noisy. Why is that?<br /> &#160;<br /><strong>5am</strong><br /><br /> The rain was now pounding our position and if we had been in the trenches fighting, we'd have evacuated our post by then, and as expected, that's when there were rumblings of discontent in the Noses camp! Dee still needed the bathroom and now really needed to go! After whining for a few more minutes, Dee raised herself off the groundsheet &#8211; rain sodden and headed off. I turned to put my umbrella up, to see Claire now laying off the groundsheet and on the flooded grass- with her head and hat (Steve Tierney's) in a large puddle of water. I thought, <strong>wow she might actually drown</strong>, but then I thought "tough, I&#8217;m too cozy in my own bag &#8211; well as cozy as I could be."</div> <div>&#160;</div> <div align="center"> <img border="0" alt="Bright Purple Byte Night - Nick's Not Moving!" src="http://www.brightpurple.co.uk/Portals/0/Members/Steel_Andrew/Nicks not moving.jpg" width="405" height="246" /> <div>Nick's not moving!</div> </div> <div>&#160;</div> <div>You'll be happy to hear <strong>she didn't drown</strong>, she did in fact give us all a fit of giggles and as we all realised that the groundsheet was now flooded, we couldn't stop giggling - tiredness maybe? We were all getting wetter the more the rain fell and nothing was going to stop it. Everything was now funny and it didn't even matter when we eventually found Dee's mobile phone laying some way away from us and soaking - that seemed funny as well.<br /> &#160;<br /><strong>Now it became a battle of the strongest, or daftest, to see who'd stay the course and be the&#160;last man or woman standing!</strong><br /> &#160;<br /><strong>5:30 am</strong><br /><br /> Now 5:30am.......first off the sheet was Dee, bathroom bound and then Ryan followed, looking shattered. Claire after nearly drowning decided enough was enough. "I'm cold" she exclaimed....as she tried to release herself from her survival bag and 3 times falling backwards in to the puddles. Eventually she managed to drag herself and her gear off towards the marquee in the distance to try and warm up.</div> <div>&#160;</div> <div align="center"> <img border="0" alt="Bright Purple Byte Night - Sanctuary!" src="/Portals/0/Members/Steel_Andrew/Sanctuary.jpg" width="405" height="246" /> <div>Sanctuary from the rain at 5am in Edinburgh</div> </div> <div> <br /> So it was down to Mike and me, but Mike soon gave up and after a lame excuse about needing the bathroom, it was the old man of the team left laying in his bag and starting to feel soaked? That was because as soon as everyone got up the puddles on the ground sheet started to relocate and I found that now my shoulders were in the water - my jacket was fast becoming a sponge! While still trying to tough it out, I got a visit from Claire, who asked me, <strong>"why aren't we going home?&#8221;</strong><br /><br /> I lifted my head, rain still falling and looked around the field, people were now getting up and moving about, so it was my turn to vacate the premises. I got out of my bag and stepped in to my Merrills, only to find I was now standing in a giant puddle - feet now wet through................. And it was&#160;still raining.<br /><br /> We packed up, the team had a coffee and a bun and we said our goodbyes. Made our way to the car park some distance off and all slumped in to the car - putting the heating to full blast and cranking up the sounds of Madness, Baggy Trousers... it's was nearly 7am.</div> <div> <br /> &#160;</div> <div> <div align="center"> <img border="0" alt="Bright Purple Byte Night - Ryan and Mike The Morning After" src="/Portals/0/Members/Steel_Andrew/Ryan and Mike The Morning After.jpg" width="405" height="246" /> <div>Ryan and Mike after a "good nights sleep"</div> </div> </div> <div> <br /> Did we have fun........<strong>maybe fun is too strong a word to use</strong>, but we got to share an experience together that the 5 of us will be able to talk about in years to come. We did it and we got wet, very wet and yet, we still stuck it out.<br /> &#160;<br /> When I got home, I showered, had a hot breakfast, brushed my teeth and jumped under my duvet - I was exhausted. I thought to myself, how does someone who really is homeless, with absolutely no where to turn, no friends to help, more tired than I could ever imagine, at threat of danger all the time, just do the basic's to get through their day?<br /> &#160;</div> <div>They don't have an address, so they can't get a job, how do they earn enough to get back on the ladder?&#160;This event&#160;made me think how lucky my family and I actually are, because my kids are not going to be on a street tonight, hidden under a piece of cardboard, trying to fend off the weather. Failure to properly present your &#8216;social CV&#8217; could damage your job-hunting prospects. Social networking sites are enabling recruiters to access a much larger pool of talent, therefore the jobs market is becoming even more competitive.&#8221; </p> <div>&#8220;I cannot stress enough to people that once they commit a picture or a comment to the internet it is there for all to see,&#8221; he said. &#8220;You may think it&#8217;s only your friends and family reading your Twitter comments or watching your YouTube video, but be in no doubt recruiters and employers are checking candidate&#8217;s online behaviour to assess their suitability and judgement. The message very much is: be as professional as possible with your social networking or it could come back to haunt you and undermine your career.&#8221;<br /><br /><em><strong><span><em><strong>Original Article from </strong></em><a href="http://www.recruiter.co.uk/candidates-should-ensure-their-social-networking-sites-are-as-professional-as-possible-warns-scantec-personnel/1003198.article"><em><strong>Recruiter</strong></em></a><br /></span></strong></em></div> Wed, 28 Oct 2009 12:26:28Andrew SteelWed, 28 Oct 2009 12:09:29Tue, 28 Oct 2014 12:09:29http://brightpurple.webwisebusiness.co.uk/News/ITComment/tabid/121/default.aspx?article=Recruiters+Checking+Up+On+Candidates+Online+Profiles 20http://brightpurple.webwisebusiness.co.uk//Portals/0/Members/Steel_Andrew/TwitterT.jpgSeptember Surge in Financial Services Recruitmenthttp://brightpurple.webwisebusiness.co.uk/News/FinanceComment/tabid/120/default.aspx?article=September+Surge+in+Financial+Services+Recruitment 19September marked a surge in financial services recruitment, but is this a sign of lasting growth, or simply the result of the yearly surge brought about by graduate recruitment programmes?Mon, 19 Oct 2009 12:37:51 GMTSeptember Surge in Financial Services RecruitmentSeptember marked a surge in financial services recruitment, but is this a sign of lasting growth, or simply the result of the yearly surge brought about by graduate recruitment programmes? <div> <font color="#000000" face="Arial"> <div align="center">&#160;</div> <div align="center"> <img border="0" alt="Bright Purple - IT and Financial Recruitment" src="/Portals/0/Members/Steel_Andrew/BRP Office banner.jpg" width="405" height="146" /> </div> <br /> According to the latest findings from pre-employment screening firm Powerchex, there has been a dramatic increase in recruitment activity in the financial services sector in September.</font> </div> <div>&#160;</div> <div> <font color="#000000" face="Arial">The research&#160;highlighted the 51% month-on-month increase in employment offers from&#160;investment management firms&#160;between August and&#160;September. I had of course heard about it, but really knew nothing about the disease and why should I, it had never&#160;impacted my family and, as they say, "out of sight, is out of mind!" <br /><br /> That charity was called The 65 Roses and now I&#8217;m now hooked on helping this magnificent cause and those that suffer from Cystic Fibrosis, so once again I set off to raise some money. Yes I know it&#8217;s at a time when the world is in economic crisis and everyone is watching the pennies, but if I didn&#8217;t ask &#8211; I wouldn&#8217;t get.<br /> &#160;<br /><a href="http://www.brightpurple.co.uk"><strong style="color: #800080">Bright Purple</strong></a> clients and friends of our company are the best, so supportive of our exploits to help others less fortunate than ours. Without constant daily treatment, which in itself can be an awful experience for the sufferer, your lungs can drown with the fluid build-up. 8000 people suffer from CF in the UK, it might not sound a lot, but its 8000 too many in our opinion. <br /><br /></td> <td> <img border="0" alt="Bright Purple - Nick Awaiting His Turn To Abseil The Forth Rail Bridge" src="http://www.brightpurple.co.uk/Portals/0/Members/Steel_Andrew/Waiting for my turn bp.jpg" width="123" height="200" /> </td> </tr> </tbody> </table> </div> <div>Over 2 million people in the UK carry the faulty gene that causes CF &#8211; that&#8217;s around 1 in 25 of our population! Around only half of the Cystic Fibrosis population can expect to live to over 35 years, although improvements in treatments mean a baby born today could expect to live even longer.</div> <div> <br /> Therefore, on September 13th 2009, I abseiled 165 feet off one of Scotland's most famous structures - the Forth Rail Bridge. Did you know it is Scotland&#8217;s biggest listed building - I didn&#8217;t? They began building it in 1883 and finished it in 1890, an architectural masterpiece that maybe those of us living in and around Edinburgh and Fife&#160;take for granted these days.<br /> &#160;<br /> So did I look forward to stepping over the edge in to the abyss &#8211; aye right! "Not at all", is the serious answer and&#160;if I am being honest, the thought of just a wee rope and a helmet being my only safety mechanism (not even a safety net to catch me) didn&#8217;t fill me with glee. But hey it was all for a fantastic cause which you have read all about above, so nothing was going to stop me! I had support from friends and family, but just as importantly from people like June Ross, a regional fund raising manager for Cystic Fibrosis who works tirelessly for the charity - these people&#160;are the real hero's, who have to fight every day to raise another pound.</div> <p>Many of my team here at&#160;<a href="http://www.brightpurple.co.uk"><strong style="color: #800080">Bright Purple Resourcing</strong></a> are involved in various charity events to raise money for some excellent causes.&#160;Some have grown beard's for breast cancer, others have run 10k's and in October 09 our team will take part in <a href="http://www.brightpurple.co.uk/News/InTheCommunity/tabid/122/default.aspx?article=Never Mind Byte Night What About Biting Cold Night 28"><strong>Byte Night 09</strong></a>. People are pre-programmed to have a passport to prove they are allowed to work here.<br /><br /> &#8220;It takes no effort to take a passport and keep a photocopy on the person&#8217;s file. It is standard procedure.&#8221;<br /><br /> Leah Whitley, recruitment consultant at commercial recruiter TopType Personnel, says: &#8220;We check passports, birth certificates, full driving lists, qualifications, references and CVs. There is a long list of things to check to register here. It is integral to what we do.&#8221;</div> <div> <br /> John Barker, managing director at candidate verification service provider TSSI Systems, adds: &#8220;The fines are hefty and could put many companies out of business if they are caught breaking the law in the same way.<br /><br /> &#8220;Civil penalties are no longer just a vague threat that businesses think they&#8217;re safe from. This case proves that ignorance is no excuse and the UK Border Agency means business. Baroness Scotland&#8217;s case will do nothing but prompt immigration officers to up their game. Business owners had better make sure they have all the correct and up to date employment documents in place fast or face hefty fines which could seriously dent their profits.</div> <div>&#160;</div> <div>&#8220;You can expect to pay up to &#163;10,000 per staff member if you&#8217;re caught out and in today&#8217;s uncertain times, nobody can afford these penalties.<br /><br /> &#8220;There are tools on the market that allow anybody recruiting staff to check if they are eligible to work in the UK by verifying the authenticity of their passport, driving license or visa documents. This is a small price to pay for any company wishing to stay in business.&#8221;<br /><br /><span style="color: #800080; font-weight: bold;"><a href="http://www.brightpurple.co.uk"><span style="color: #800080; font-weight: bold;">Bright Purple</span></a></span>&#160;operations director, Jan Mutch is all too aware of the growing compliance requirements that are facing clients, candidates and recruiters. The new team is headed up by finance recruitment specialist Mike Leeman, so we decided to put Mike under the spotlight in order to find out what makes him tick! <div> <a style="color: #800080; font-weight: bold;" href="www.brightpurple.co.uk"> </a> </div> <div style="text-align: center;"> <img alt="Bright Purple Banking and Finance Recruitment" src="/Portals/0/Members/Steel_Andrew/BRP Office banner.jpg" height="146" width="405" />&#160;</div> <div>&#160;</div> <div> <a style="color: #800080; font-weight: bold;" href="www.brightpurple.co.uk">Bright Purple</a> continued on its growth path during 2008/9 in one of the toughest economic climates the UK has known and with that confidence behind them, the business has decided to expand its service offering to the banking and financial markets. With the turmoil in the markets, especially the banks and financial institutions, some might question the strategy, however Bright Purple&#8217;s MD&#160;<a href="/About/OurPeople/NickPrice/tabid/77/Default.aspx">Nick Price</a> is confident it&#8217;s the right time.</div> <div> <br /> Nick commented &#8220;our company has always supplied the banks and financial markets with technology people, but these days many of the candidates we work for, have to have a strong business background as well. Therefore we found that we were working with clients on roles that were moving more towards the business and so it was an easy decision to bring in someone to lead a pure finance based team.&#8221;<br /><br /> He continued &#8220;we knew the type of person we wanted to lead the new offering and we hired Mike Leeman in the main role. Mike knows his business area, he has a great work ethic and is well respected by the clients who have worked with him and we are confident he will be a great addition to our team here at Bright Purple.&#8221;<br /><br /> Mike Leeman joined Bright Purple from Michael Page in May 2009 to lead the banking and&#160;<a href="/Finance/tabid/120/Default.aspx">financial services recruitment</a> team. With over 8 years recruiting in to the UK banking and financial markets, Mike brings a wealth of experience to Bright Purple.<br /><br /> So what do we know about Mike?<br /><br style="font-weight: bold;" /><span style="font-weight: bold;">What Made you choose recruitment as a career?</span><br /><br /> After graduating from university I ran a theatre company for 4 years which was great fun, but not too financially rewarding. Soon after moving to London I was introduced to recruitment as a career option and I jumped at the opportunity to try. The key things that I liked about recruitment were that it was a job where personal communication was an essential skill, enabling you to talk to a wide variety of people every day. It was a job where you could make a real positive change in people&#8217;s lives and play a part in their future success. Most importantly it was a role where you were responsible for your own progression and success, the more work you put in the more you were rewarded.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Why did you decide Bright Purple Resourcing was the right move for you?</span><br /><br /> The reputation that Bright Purple had for personal service and delivering results, made me interested in them in the first instance. On meeting Nick Price and his team I could see that Bright Purple was a company that everyone felt passionate working for. The commitment and help that they were prepared to give to me to help me become successful and also to the new financial services venture, meant that this was a great offer from a great company.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">What is your remit going forward?</span><br /><br /> Quite simply to grow the business! By engaging with more clients and candidates the Bright Purple name is becoming synonymous not only with results in the technology sector but the financial services sector as well. I want us to be people&#8217;s first choice when they are looking for a new role or looking to fill a vacancy.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">How&#8217;s life been at Bright Purple since May 2009?</span><br /><br /> Life has been great, but very busy. It has taken a lot of time and effort to set the business in motion and to get the message out to the financial services community. I have not been disappointed in the team here, as Nick&#8217;s enthusiasm and positivity infects everyone in the office. Everyone has been a great help. On a personal note my career at Bright Purple was interrupted early on, as I got married in August 2009 and so it is all systems go now, as I need to pay for the wedding!<br /> &#160;<br /><br /></div> <div id="seolinx-tooltip" style="border: 1px solid #000000; Nick said &#8220;as a business we are trying to look at our corporate and social responsibilities and there&#8217;s a lot to do, but kid&#8217;s and sport are something we feel strongly about. Therefore putting sponsorship into a local football side was a good option for us, and it helps that many of us are football fans ourselves.&#8221;<br /><br /> Nick goes on, &#8220;<a href="http://www.spartansfc.com/"><strong>Spartans</strong></a> are one of Scotland&#8217;s most famous amateur sides and have a very long history of bringing both young boy&#8217;s and girl&#8217;s through their academy systems and working closely with the local community. In December 2008 the Spartans opened their new community football academy, and in the summer of 2009 the senior team moved to a brand new stadium at Ainslie Park.<br /><br /> The local kids that live in the vicinity of the academy get free access to play football during certain times of the day, which keeps them off the street and gives them a sense of belonging, which in turn helps Spartans to build their brand.<br /><br /><div align="center"><img alt="Bright Purple - Sponsors of Spartans FC under 15's" src="/Portals/0/Members/Steel_Andrew/Spartans1.JPG" width="405" height="296" /></div><br /><br /> Head Coach of Spartans FC Under 15&#8217;s is Ali Mitchell, a dedicated man and who is SFA qualified to train children &amp; youth level. Ali had been coaching with Spartans since 2001 and gives up a lot of his personal time to carry out training sessions and of course take his team for games on a Sunday afternoon. He started his involvement, like many others, with his own son playing for Spartans and through time he got involved in training sessions and from there, he was hooked! Last season Ali led this same Spartans side to 4 cup semi finals and a respectable Top 5 finish in their first year in Division 1.<br /> &#160;<br /> Nick has been impressed by Ali&#8217;s methods for working with his team and quoted, &#8221;Ali earns respect of his team by making decisions, and not always easy decisions. He gets the job done and is focused on getting results. When results don&#8217;t go his way, Ali is professional in delivery of the message back to his team and he works with them to look at weaknesses, as well as strengths. I see a lot of qualities in him that are required in my daily business life, so supporting his team wasn&#8217;t a difficult decision. He is totally dedicated to the kids and gives freely of his time week in and week out, while he continues to run his own successful business. Where would kids be without the likes of Ali and the many other people around the country who stand at the side of pitches watching youngsters playing football, in rain, hail or shine?&#8221;<br /><br /> The squad that Bright Purple are supporting is &#8211;<br /> 1.&#160;Keiran (cat) Davidson <br /> 2.&#160;Gregg Veitch<br /> 3.&#160;Gordon Aitken<br /> 4.&#160;Rharidh Smith<br /> 5.&#160;Scott Docherty<br /> 6.&#160;Dylan Rintoul<br /> 7.&#160;Scott Murchie<br /> 8.&#160;Jesper Price<br /> 9.&#160;Callum Mein<br /> 10.&#160;Robbie Shepherdson<br /> 11.&#160;Thomas Docherty<br /> 12.&#160;Bradley Laing<br /> 13.&#160;Elliot Mitchell<br /> 14.&#160;Lloyd McGhee<br /> 15.&#160;Ross Wilcox<br /> 16.&#160;Sean Davidson<br /> 17.&#160;Stuart Wilcox<br /> 18.&#160;Ben Black </div> <p>Bright Purple wishes the boys all the best for the season ahead and we&#8217;ll be bringing you up to speed on progress throughout. The research also indicated that the number of IT contractors with "false truths" on their CV's has trebled to 18%.<br /> &#160;<br /> While the rise in competition for IT and financial positions might make some candidates feel they need to "pad out" their CV in order to compete, <span style="color: #800080;"><strong>Bright Purple</strong></span> operations director Jan Mutch believe that recruiters must take greater responsibility in weeding out candidates who are being "less than economical with the truth".<br /> &#160;<br /> "At Bright Purple, we ensure that our recruitment professionals put the time in, in order to fully understand the roles they are recruiting for and the requirements of the client. Working in this manner, rather than simply recruiting based on matches in buzzwords from the job spec on candidate CV's ensures that the client is provided with candidates who are fully equipped and honestly capable of the role".</font> </div> <div>&#160;</div> <div style="font-style: italic;">(For original article see <a href="http://www.recruiter.co.uk/more-financial-job-hunters-&#8216;lie&#8217;-on-cvs/1002347.article">Recruiter</a>)</div> <div id="seolinx-tooltip" style="border: 2px solid #0099ff; Year on year there has been significant growth in this market as many organisations seek to keep apace of the growth of e-commerce. Therefore, for candidates with the right skills and attitude, these are undeniably positive times." is hardly surprising that IT security recruitment is performing well in a difficult climate. <div>&#160;</div><div style="font-style: italic">(For original article see <a href="http://www.recruiter.co.uk/war-for-e-commerce-talent-intensifies/1002158.article">Recruiter</a>)</div></div> <div style="z-index: 99999; This event is also different from most, in that it takes place at night and it is a remarkable sight, thousands of women and men marching in the dark in colourful, decorated bras. </p> <div>Last year the event raised more than &#163;3 million and 2009 hope&#8217;s to do even better. </div> <p>Bright Purple are proud of Jan, Ally&#160;and Karen-Rose and would like to congratulate them on their efforts. </p> Wed, 01 Jul 2009 13:10:49Andrew SteelWed, 01 Jul 2009 13:09:56Tue, 01 Jul 2014 13:09:56http://brightpurple.webwisebusiness.co.uk/News/TheCommunity/tabid/122/default.aspx?article=Bright+Purple+Staff+Do+The+Moonwalk 5http://brightpurple.webwisebusiness.co.uk//Portals/0/Members/Steel_Andrew/Moonwalk.jpgBright Purple MD Nick Price Elected to ScotlandIS Boardhttp://brightpurple.webwisebusiness.co.uk/News/BusinessComment/tabid/127/default.aspx?article=Bright+Purple+MD+Nick+Price+Elected+to+ScotlandIS+Board 4Bright Purple managing director Nick Price has been elected to the board of ScotlandIS, the trade organisation for Scotland's ICT industry.Wed, 01 Jul 2009 13:07:59 GMTBright Purple MD Nick Price Elected to ScotlandIS BoardBright Purple managing director Nick Price has been elected to the board of ScotlandIS, the trade organisation for Scotland's ICT industry. <strong style="color: #800080"> <a href="http://www.brightpurple.co.uk"> <strong style="color: #800080">Bright Purple</strong> </a> </strong>&#160;co-founder and managing director Nick Price has been elected to the board of ScotlandIS, the trade body responsible for Scotland&#8217;s software and information communications technologies (ICT) industries.<br /><br /> Nick&#8217;s election to the board was confirmed in May, and his duties commenced on June 10th, when the new board were inducted at the inaugural dinner, during which the previous board were thanked for all their hard work.<br /><br /> Nick is joined on the new board of ScotlandIS by David Farquhar, CEO of 2in10, a venture management firm based in Glasgow; and Wendy McDougall, founder of 9-12 recruitment.<br /><br /> Of the appointment, Nick said &#8220;This is an important organisation in Scotland, representing the many large, SME and start-up technology businesses across Scotland.&#8221; He added, &#8220;the Scottish technology and communications sector has produced a number of great companies over the years, companies with genuine international scale and reach. Sullivan, are believed to have been influenced by the growing concern over security of confidential and important information. With IT security having become a hot topic following a string of recent, high-profile news stories concerning government database security, it is hardly surprising that IT security recruitment is performing well in a difficult climate. <div>&#160;</div><div style="font-style: italic">(For original article see <a href="http://www.recruiter.co.uk/it-security-roles-in-demand/1001666.article">Recruiter</a>)</div></div> <div style="z-index: 99999; Ryan, Karen-Rose and Claire, along&#160;with Brian Butler, Managing Director of Accelerate, and a&#160;seasoned professional in the lean management arena, worked together as a team to examine inconsistencies in current processes, duplication of effort and misuse of systems.<br /> &#160;<br /> The team used a variety of tools to help them look at the problems including Ishikawa Diagrams, Cost Analysis, Pareto and Process Mapping to come up with some ideas on how the business could improve it's efficiencies and save costs, as well as wasted time. Managing Director Nick Price commented, "We are a people business and are Investors in People accredited. Therefore it is important we continue to do just that and invest in our people, so I hand picked the team." <br /><br /></font> </div> <div align="center"> <img border="0" alt="Bright Purple - Lean Management Process Map" src="/Portals/0/Members/Steel_Andrew/Lean Management image1.jpg" width="405" height="304" /> </div> <div> <br /> <br /> "I felt it was right to have young, eager minds working on how to make us a better, more efficient business and I think it worked out just fine. All along, the team showed great committment, because they still had their day jobs to do, and I have to admit that the amount of yellow stickies that covered the walls of one of our large meeting rooms, while they worked their way through their processes, left me wondering if they actually would ever get there. I am very proud to say they did!"<br /> &#160;<br /> The finale for the young team was to present their work on the big stage on June 8th 2009 to a group of managing directors, CEO's and even the chairman of a listed company, all of whom represented the 7 other businesses presenting on the same day. The team also drew the short straw, as in illustrious company they were picked to follow a very polished team from Barclays Wealth, but the three presented with confidence and professionalism. <br /> &#160;<br /> Brian Butler, who had worked with the team from the start commented, "Accelerate work throughout the UK assisting service sector companies in implementing &#8220;Lean Solutions&#8221;. The Accelerate &#8220;Lean Management Thinking Programme&#8221; is a national product for Scotland and is now recognised as an Institute of Leadership &amp; Management (ILM) Development Programme. Bright Purple had an exceptionally enthusiastic team that analysed the business to highlight Non Value Added activity and demonstrate the true cost of business waste. It was inspiring to see how the team opened up the business to engage in real life Lean implementation. Their hard work will reap excellent rewards for the business going forward."<br /> &#160;<br /> Bright Purple will be encouraging it's new found lean team to continue looking for ways to improve the business as it moves forward.<br /></div> Mon, 21 Sep 2009 10:18:07Andrew SteelSun, 21 Jun 2009 10:04:39Sun, 21 Sep 2014 10:04:39http://brightpurple.webwisebusiness.co.uk/News/BusinessComment/tabid/127/default.aspx?article=Lean+Management+Thinking 12http://brightpurple.webwisebusiness.co.uk//Portals/0/Members/Steel_Andrew/BrightPurple thumb.jpgScottishPower lift ScotlandIS 5-a-side trophyhttp://brightpurple.webwisebusiness.co.uk/News/TheCommunity/tabid/122/default.aspx?article=ScottishPower+lift+ScotlandIS+5aside+trophy 44Bright Purple Resourcing recently took part in the hotly contested ScotlandIS 5-a-side football tournament. After a rollercoaster ride of crunching tackles and spectacular goals, the team made it to the final for a nail biting finale... <div> <br /> After a hard-fought match, at the San Siro (unfortunately not Milan&#8217;s famous stadium, but a 5-a-side replica at Edinburgh Corn Exchange&#8217;s World of Football), <strong>ScottishPower</strong> secured a 3 - 1 victory over tournament outsiders <strong>Bright Purple Resourcing</strong> (BPR) to win the <strong>2009 ScotlandIS 5-a-side football tournament</strong>. Having fallen behind to an early BPR goal, ScottishPower wrapped up the trophy with two late goals after a very close match.<br /><br /></div> <div align="center"> <img border="0" alt="Bright Purple 5-aside team" src="/Portals/0/Members/Steel_Andrew/BrightPurple-team.png" width="400" height="239" /> </div> <div> <br /> <br /> On a very cold Friday in May, ten teams arrived in Edinburgh for the highlight of the football season. These ten teams were split into two groups of five in a 'round robin' format, in pursuit of one prize - the ScotlandIS 5-a-side trophy.<br /><br /><strong>Group Stages</strong><br /><br /><strong>Group A</strong>, nicknamed the <em>&#8216;group of death&#8217;</em> as it contained both of last years finalists, consisted of holders 9-20 Recruitment, Praxa, Conscia, Head Resourcing and RBS, last years beaten finalists, out for revenge. The group was eventually won by Head Resourcing, who beat 9-20 into second place. Conscia - who were in need of a plumber due to their leaky defence - picked up the tournament wooden spoon, failing to pick up a point. There was consternation as one of the tournament favourites RBS, unable to recapture their form of last year, were eliminated at the group stage. Praxa were also eliminated at this stage picking up their only points with a 5-0 victory over Conscia.</div> <div>&#160;</div> <div> <table border="0" cellspacing="2" cellpadding="2" width="405"> <tbody> <tr style="color: #ffffff" bgcolor="#800080"> <td style="color: #ffffff; font-size: 10pt"> <strong>Team</strong> </td> <td> <strong> <span style="font-size: 10pt"> <span style="color: #ffffff"> <strong style="color: #ffffff">Won</strong> </span> </span> </strong> </td> <td> <strong style="color: #ffffff"> <span style="color: #ffffff; font-size: 10pt">Drawn</span> </strong> </td> <td> <strong> <span style="font-size: 10pt"> <span style="color: #ffffff"> <strong style="color: #ffffff">Lost</strong> </span> </span> </strong> </td> <td> <strong style="color: #ffffff"> <span style="color: #ffffff; font-size: 10pt">For</span> </strong> </td> <td style="color: #ffffff"> <strong> <span style="color: #ffffff; font-size: 10pt">Against</span> </strong> </td> <td style="width: 38px; color: #ffffff"> <span style="font-size: 10pt"> <strong style="color: #ffffff">GD</strong> </span> </td> <td style="width: 48px; height: 26px"> <strong> <span style="color: #ffffff"> <span style="color: #ffffff; font-size: 10pt">Points</span> </span> </strong> </td> </tr> <tr> <td style="width: 79px; height: 24px"> <span style="font-size: 10pt">Head</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">3</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">1</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">0</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">13</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">6</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">7</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">10</span> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">9-20</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">2</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">2</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">0</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">13</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">8</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">5</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">8</span> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">RBS</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">2</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">1</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">1</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">12</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">4</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">8</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">7</span> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">Praxa</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">1</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">0</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">3</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">8</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">10</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">-2</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">3</span> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">Conscia</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">0</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">0</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">4</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">7</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">24</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">-17</span> </td> <td> <span style="font-size: 10pt">0</span> </td> </tr> </tbody> </table> </div> <div>&#160;</div> <div>In <strong>Group B</strong>, the first of the semi-final spots went to ScottishPower who had brought an army of substitutes as part of their ongoing energy efficiency drive. Lumison, failed to improve on last years performance and went home with a solitary point. ScottishPower and 9-20 were wearing matching strips and neither team wanted to go home and change, one team captain was heard to say &#8220;I told them we were wearing blue, I bought it just for this game!&#8221; Thankfully bibs were dispatched and the game kicked off, with ScottishPower beating last years champions 9-20 with a single goal. Bright Purple took an early lead over at the San Siro and despite an excellent performance from the Head Resourcing team, decked in red strips, Bright Purple were able to resist the Head attacks and added a second, decisive, goal.<br /><br /><strong>Head Resourcing</strong> 0 - 2 <strong>Bright Purple</strong><br /><strong>ScottishPower</strong> 1 - 0 <strong>9-20 Recruitment</strong><br /><br /><strong>Final<br /></strong><br /> The final was a close affair, and after an early goal from the exhausted Bright Purple team, the ScottishPower team regrouped and put in a scintillating attacking performance, that Barcelona would have been proud of. Had it not been for the Bright Purple keeper, the score would have been higher, making a number of excellent saves, but he was unable to keep out ScottishPower&#8217;s equaliser.
